Berkeley Gardeners,
Our plumbing team is working to repair and replace damaged water spigots as result of recent vandalism.

They hope to have the water on in the garden by the end of this week 4/25.

Certain spigots will not be accessible for another week or two after that, as we work toward installing new fixtures.

Birds in the Garden

Sarah Hutt

Hello Gardeners,
My name is Sari Kalin and I joined the Berkeley Community Garden this year as a birder-in-residence. I have been birdwatching daily in the garden and I post everything on the eBird website. If gardeners are interested, I’d like to  organize a bird walk in the garden next month with Doug Lowry.  Doug is an award-winning educator and naturalist at Mass Audubon and also a seasoned gardener. The date and time is still to be determined, based on the level of interest. Please email
info@... if you're interested in joining a bird walk, and then we will do a poll among those who are interested to help us set the date.
To date I have seen or heard 20 bird species in and near the garden - from the American Robins that are such a welcome sign of spring, to a Wild Turkey spotted in the alley earlier this month. May begins spring migration - so it's likely that several more species will pass through during the coming months. Take a look at the attached PDF - and also visit eBird at
https://ebird.org/home - register, and then you can view the Berkeley Community Garden hotspot list (https://ebird.org/hotspot/L13892251) and add your own bird sightings. If you see any other new birds,  let me know - and say hi if you see me walking around the garden with my binoculars and notebook!

Gardeners paying with cash--Saturday April 17

Sarah Hutt

To our Chinese gardeners -

The gardeners below have not yet paid and do not have email access.  If you know any of these gardeners or see them in the garden, please remind them to come to the garden at 10AM on Saturday, April 17 during cleanup to pay for their plots, or we will assume they are not returning and they will forfeit their garden.

If you know these people please share this information with them.
Thank you everyone.

Ready to plant seedlings available from Neighborhood Farm---an special opportunity

Sarah Hutt

To all

I reached out to the Neighborhood Farm -the people who sell plants and produce at SOWa in the spring/summer   .Many of you have gotten plants from them in SoWa over the years.

They have agreed to deliver cold weather plants to us this weekend if we can get at minimum of 20 orders.

Their plants are excellent and produce tons of fruits. They are offering Farm Share vegetables, flowers, herbs, cold weather vegetables, and garden supplies.  They are offering peppers but those should go in a cold frame because its too cold to put them out in the garden.

IF you decide to place an order it will be delivered this Saturday afternoon April 16th.  DEADLINE to ORDER IS midnight April 14th.

PLEASE email me if you order so we can keep track of our orders and make sure they all arrive in the delivery.

Here are their instructions:  Please follow them closely -

To order, people should go on our online store, make your selection from their 3 pages of stuff. - page 1 is farm share vegetables, pages 2-3 flowers, plants, and supplies - but check to make sure you are getting plants and not vegetables if you want plants!!!

choose "Community Servings Parking Lot, JP, Pickup on Sat, April 17th 2021”.

Then, as you get to the payment page, there is a place to add a "Note to Seller”.
WRITE IN  "For Dropoff at Berkeley Community Garden" in the Note to Seller box,

and they will know to hold it aside and bring it to the garden.

PLEASE email me <info@...> if you order so we can track your order and double check so nothing gets left behind.

Good luck
Sarah

Trustee’s require us to file a report at the end of the season showing how many volunteer hours we need to sustain the garden.  It is important we are able to accurately represent the amount of work it takes to run the garden.

Plumbing UPDATE

Sarah Hutt

To all

Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning plumbers will be visiting the garden with Alex from the Trustees, (the owners of our property) to cap all the broken irrigation stands and check underground to make sure there isn’t more damage.

This may require some extensive digging along the main path where most of the damage was done.  Please do not fill in their holes!!

They will cap the broken pipes so the water can be turned on and we can use the remaining faucets not damaged in the vandalism.

Water should be on in the next week —Unless they find more damage than expected underground.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sarah

Re: Garden request for members

Peel-off China Markers work great for re-marking the existing plot number tags. I used one for C-128 4 years ago, and it hasn't changed. These are available at art supply stores, Staples, etc.

Happy to loan mine, if you want to texted me to arrange meet.

Hello Gardeners

We have a problem that I am hoping you can help with.

Some years ago one of our gardeners made plot tags indicating row and number for each of the 158 individual plots.  I’ve attached one below of the surviving tags.

Over time some have bleached out and some disappeared.  Each plot is located in one of 3 rows A, B. or C and has a unique plot number.  For example my garden is in the C Row so its C105.

These tags are really helpful as guides when we are trying to locate things in the garden and identifying gardens each spring when unclaimed gardens are available for Lottery.

Our request if to asking everyone to please make a plot sign to identify their garden plot.

Be creative! It should be made of durable materials - you can repurpose the old tag - make sure to use the letter row and number.

Please feel free to include Chinese, Russian or whatever your language is but make sure to also include English

If you don’t know your plot number or need help attaching it to your garden fence, let me know.    Labels should be attached near your gate and be at least 2” x 3”.
Everyone that makes a tag will be credited with an hour of garden community work time.
If you have questions please let me know.
