Help needed for garden Renewal March 24

Sarah Hutt

Hello Gardeners

Help is needed on March 24th for the gardeners renewal -- this IS THE LAST DAY TO PAY FOR GARDEN PLOTS.   Help is needed to take in fees.  We will be at Project Place from 10 AM to NOON.  (see you garden letter for more info)
If you would like to pick up some community hours please email me at <info@...>
If you would like to help with translation please let me know at <info@...>

NEW THIS YEAR

PLEASE NOTE:  Due to pressure from our surrounding neighborhood - and new rules from the Trustees you will NO LONGER be able to store anything in your garden that is not related to the immediate task of gardening.  No storage of unused planters, boxes, wire, bike wheels, suitcases, etc……..you must store these things off site.  People that insist on using their garden for storage will be asked to leave.

YOU ARE allowed to keep buckets of dirt.  We realize many gardeners put a portion of the yearly compost in buckets to build up the soil - we will work with you to set a reasonable bucket limit.

Over the next few weeks a working committee will be set up to develop a new policy.  If you would like to participate please respond to <info@...>

Gardens will need to be cleaned by April 7th during garden cleanup when we have the dumpster available there will be no exceptions.

For People Not Returning:
In the past anyone that did not pay by the deadline was tracked down to confirm they were leaving.  This was very time consuming and will not be done this year.  If you are putting off paying and miss the date your garden will go into the March 31 Lottery.

If you are not returning please return your gate keys and padlock keys - a small thing but it costs about $20 for keys and padlock for each garden so making copies adds up - recycle them!!!

If you are leaving and want to remove plants or objects from the garden you must do it before March 31 the new lottery garden member will take over the garden plot on that day.

thanks, more info on April 7 cleanup is coming

Hi Danielle,

Jeremy of the Trustees, who usually just does Berkeley for us, took care of everything as our snow team hasn’t gotten out there yet.

We shovel the sidewalks only, and no not clear the doorways or any gravel surface.    (Except the main door only to get the snow equipment in and out)

Hi snow team,
Apologies if this goes to all. I checked the sidewalks at the garden all look good not sure who is also clearing snow. Do the door entries need clearing as well?

Hi all,

We'll be moving this email list over to a new service.

You don't need to do anything - it should all happen behind the scenes, and you'll get an email when the move is complete.

This will allow us to better manage the list and make our archives searchable.

Thanks

Hello all

With the holidays upon us our Shoveling Team is a little short of help.

If you would consider helping out please let me know.

The Trustees have agreed to shovel/use our snow blower along E. Berkeley and will also shovel along the Shawmut and Tremont ends of the garden but we are suppose to monitor them and keep them clear since the Trustee help are responsible for all 90 gardens.

We need someone who can check the area, watch the weather and let folks know when it needs to be cleared.
This person can help with the work or just announce what needs to be done to coordinate for others to assist
 - The shovels are in the shed
- There is a salt spreader in the shed to cover the sidewalks if needed to keep the sidewalk clear  - and a few bags of salt and sand in the shed to add to the 50/50 mix

Anyone that assists gets double hours - and we round up to the next hour so its a good way to clear up your hours for the year.

If you are interested please let me know

Season Update

Sarah Hutt

To all
GATES are now LOCKED for the season - and water will be turned off this week - with the season winding down and weather changes lets all work together to make sure the gates are locked.   Our new spiffy gates are self locking when you leave just close them behind you.  IF you need a key let me know.

Ted is still treating gardens against rats so if you see anything please let us know.  Remember besides rats there are skunks in the neighborhood too so don’t leave any trash - rotting vegetables in your garden.

Need some work hours????????

Would anyone be interested in helping with the last organized neighborhood clean up -- Saturday NOVEMBER 18?  The City’s Love Your Block will be held on the 18th - clean up is between 10 - NOON City will pick up any bagged trash.  Coffee and donuts are usually served at the start …. if anyone is interested please respond

There are still daffodil bulbs available for planting - respond to this email if you are interesting in planting some

Trash always needs to be picked up in the garden.

If you like winter sports and want to do a little exercise when it snows consider joining the snow team - we have worked out an arrangement to only shovel Tremont and Shawmut ends of the garden - you are given double hours for the work  -  please respond to this email -

Remember if you do independent work hours send it to <cleanups@...>  With your name, plot number, the date you work, what you worked on, and the numbers of hours.

If you are interested in an intensive learning experience to become a Master Urban Gardener check out this link: https://goo.gl/forms/ilEuUCCKkc6Jhj542

Just a reminder

This weekend

October 28 Annual Fall Garden Clean Up and Potluck Lunch.

During our final clean up we will have a dumpster - this is your opportunity to clear out your garden of wood, plastic, and other things you have accumulated over the summer.  We will be asking everyone to clean out their gardens.   Due to the influx of rats this summer we will set traps and bait gardens for the winter to try and keep the rats under control.

The dumpster will be on site all day Friday 27th , Saturday 28th, and Sunday 29th but it does fill up.

If you have decided not to return to the garden in 2018 this is a great time to get your garden cleaned out, pick up your tools, and get it ready for a new crop of owner

Need some work hours?? We Need Your Help to make Saturday October 28th a success.

  • Clean up team that day (help gardeners who need assistance cleaning out their garden, cleaning common areas)
  • Maintenance repair team (simple repair tasks)
  • Common area plant team (includes planting fall bulbs, preparing areas for winter),
  • Team to oversee potluck  (Ordering and Picking up the pizzas,.checking on paper goods, setting up the tables, and cleaning area after lunch)

There are still a lot of independent work tasks around general maintenance - so if interested we will work with your schedule

  • Rotating the shed to bring winter things to the front,
  • Common area plant team (includes preparing plant areas for winter, planting fall bulbs, removing dead bushes, bush trimming, transplanting),

Rather work from home on an administrative job -

  • Join Committee to prepare 2018 garden renewal packets.

Over the winter - once the snow starts

  • Work with Ted to do Light Snow Removal  over the winter - we have people shoveling but we need help to make sure the Shawmut end is clear early for kids going to school and Tremont ends for commuters and the bus stop.

 Thank you

October 28th Saturday Annual End of Garden Clean up and Potluck

Sarah Hutt

To all
We are looking forward to seeing everyone for our final garden gathering of the season.  We will have a dumpster from Friday - Sunday so take advantage of this opportunity to open up the space in your garden !!!!  Get rid of wood, buckets, old fencing and other unused things that clog up your garden over the summer.

The City’s Parks Department will be distributing Daffodil bulbs for planting around Berkeley Garden - Next time you are at Home Depot consider picking up other types of bulbs to compliment the daffodils - ether donate them to the common areas or put them in and around your plot.  Its only 5 months (150 days) till spring !!!

If you know you are not returning this is your chance to salvage anything you want to keep - please make arrangements to leave your keys and locks !!!!

If you have been working independently in the garden be sure to get your work hours in - it just takes a minute - Name, plot number, amount of time, description of what you did.   <cleanups@...>

Thanks everyone

Lawn Bags

Danielle Abrams <abramsmd@...>

I went in today to do some cleanup, however there were no bags around. Unfortunately, I did not have any bags either.

There is lots of loose trash. I threw what I could carry to the bins in Peter's Park. Someone threw a few wood slats and a big window on the corner near my plot. I left those for tomorrow. I looked in the shed, but did not see any bags there either.
