End of Season update -

Sarah Hutt

 Hi all

Well, its the end of September - 4 weeks till October 28 Annual Fall Garden Clean Up and Potluck Lunch.  You still have time to plant cold weather plants - chard, carrots, beets……

Last Monday night Clean up and Social Hour is October 16th due to the time change clean up will be at 5pm - 6pm.

During our final clean up we will have a dumpster - this is your opportunity to clear out your garden of wood, plastic, and other things you have accumulated over the summer.  We will be asking everyone to clean out their gardens.   Due to the influx of rats this summer we will set traps and bait gardens for the winter to try and keep the rats under control.

The dumpster will be on site all day Friday 27th , Saturday 28th, and Sunday 29th but it does fill up.

If you have decided not to return to the garden in 2018 this is a great time to get your garden cleaned out, pick up your tools, and get it ready for a new crop of owner

Need some work hours?? We Need Your Help to make Saturday October 28th a success.

  • Clean up team that day (help gardeners who need assistance cleaning out their garden, cleaning common areas)
  • Maintenance repair team (simple repair tasks)
  • Common area plant team (includes planting fall bulbs, preparing areas for winter),
  • Team to oversee potluck  (Ordering and Picking up the pizzas,.checking on paper goods, setting up the tables, and cleaning area after lunch)

There are still a lot of independent work tasks around general maintenance - so if interested we will work with your schedule

  • Rotating the shed to bring winter things to the front,
  • Common area plant team (includes preparing plant areas for winter, planting fall bulbs, removing dead bushes, bush trimming, transplanting),

Rather work from home on an administrative job -

  • Recording work hours into an Excel File
  • Join Committee to prepare 2018 garden renewal packets.

Over the winter - once the snow starts

  • Work with Ted to do Light Snow Removal  over the winter - we have people shoveling but we need help to make sure the Shawmut end is clear early for kids going to school and Tremont ends for commuters and the bus stop.

 Thank you

HELLO Gardeners -  - hope you all got to enjoy it in some way

A couple of things -
Trustees will be scraping the fence of chipping paint over 2 days w/BU students on August 31 + Sept 1st  from  9 – 1p  If you are interested in helping please respond to this email.

Rats in the garden
YES there are rats in the garden there are also squirrels, mice, raccoons and rabbits - because the garden is a perfect area for food and provides secure places to hide, because the garden is situation next to the City sewers where many rats live, and because there is construction in the neighborhood pushing them into our area.
This summer Ted has taken on the work task to bait and trap rats with the help of a licensed exterminator but there is only so much they can do.
This is what  you can do.
Visit your garden daily and make sure you move around your plot
Don’t store unnecessary things in your garden that provide cover for the rats - leaving items piled along shared fences provide cover
Pick all ripe foods - do not let foods drop to the ground and rot - take trash home and add to your trash.
Consider using growing fences and other ways to keep your produce from laying on the ground
We all need to do our part  - we are all in this together!!

Concerning Plants + Branches growing beyond fence boundaries
Alley side of A Row---The Trustees now require that no branches or vines reach out into the alley.  They are coming next week Wednesday + Thursday to cut everything.  So please wind your vines back into your garden.  And make any cuts yourself -
This includes rosebushes and any other bush/tree that is growing in your garden.  If you don’t do it they will.
B Row and C Row - our garden is required to be open to the public Trustees will be cutting any branches, bushes, or vines hanging out into the public areas.  Please cut your own bushes - this is your responsibility.  If the Trustees do it we have to pay for it.
---
SNOW- it will return!
For the past 2 years we have hired a company to remove the snow -but because we can't control how many storms we have we can’t control the cost.  Last year cost was about $6,000.

The Trustees would like to work with us and instead shovel the snow this year.  We are looking for volunteers who will commit to working with a rotating team to clear the entrances of Shawmut and Tremont.  Trustees will follow up and do E. Berkeley and a 2nd run through the entrances.
If you help you will be given double hours
---
NEW Garden Gates
We have just installed new garden locks on the outer garden gates.  These gates when locked will still open from the inside protecting anyone from getting locked in.  PLEASE close the gates behind you when you leave at night.  We are starting to see people coming into the garden and stealing plants and food. PLEASE KEEP GATES LOCKED AT NIGHT

And lastly - Two events - South End Open Studios is the weekend of September expect large crowds walking through the garden.
and the Trustees are planning another event this one is an apple festival on October 21st.  If anyone is interested in working with them please respond to this email.

Thanks all - remember to record any time you have spent doing garden tasks to cleanups@...

I could use some education on which are the weeds. I'm familiar with some. If anyone with better knowledge than me and willing to give a tutorial is planning to weed this weekend or next week, please text me at (617) 794-8604 and I'll try to join you.

As we slide through the growing season opportunities for helping out with the garden pop up - please respond to this email if you are interested in one of these jobs

FIX THE WAGON
The garden has two wagons that are actively used throughout the season.  Both have wheels that in need of repair.  If you are interested in taking this on details about the wheels will be provided and we will set up an arrangement for you to be reimbursed for any expenses with Garden funds.

MOWING THE LAWN
The Center area and area down by the Shawmut end need to be mowed on a regular basis - mow once mow twice - if interested please let me know

TRASH pick up
I have no idea where its coming from but if you see papers and other things pick them up - If you see trash piled by the Shawmut gate please remove it and put it out with the trash - this is not the place to leave it but someone seems to be doing so.

And remember if you are doing hours send them to <cleanups@...> with your name, plot number, amount of time you worked, the date you work, and what you worked on
