June Schedule in the garden
Sarah Hutt
PLEASE NOTE ALL GARDENS MUST BE PLANTED BY JUNE 1 or you risk loosing your garden. On Sunday June 2 gardeners are invited to come tell their stories - Zach Nowak comes to us from Harvard University. He works in the University’s History Department and is committed to setting up archives about the community gardens in Boston. He will be working with Berkeley over the next few years to set up archives with us that will include gardener oral histories, a photo of your garden, and plant specimens or seeds. We are currently deciding between Mass Historical Society and Northeastern University Social Change Research Library to hold our information. The plant specimens will be formally mounted and go to the Harvard Herbarium. We will set up around the garden to interview 6 gardeners on Sunday June 2 from 9 AM - Noon. Then do more over the summer. Chinese translators will be here to help answer any questions. All interviews will be recorded so you can speak in your native language. You will receive a transcript of your conversation so you can make additions and changes. If you would like to help or just observe please visit the garden. Garden Update April 4
Sarah Hutt
Good morning everyone - Everyone continues to prepare for Saturday’s cleanup and cookout - the dumpster will arrive tomorrow and be on site through Sunday leaving very early on Monday morning. There will be no parking along Shawmut Ave in front of the garden. When you are putting stuff in the dumpster please load from the back and keep piles compact to utilize all the space — its a big dumpster but we always fill it to the top. WATER The water is being turned on this week in Boston’s Community Gardens. We don’t know the exact time but Jeremy our Trustee representative will be in Berkeley today or tomorrow to make sure the pipes are in good condition and check for leaks. Please notify info@... or contact Leadership rep if you see one of the irrigation stations leaking or notice any unusual areas in the group that appear to be saturated with water - this could indicate an underground leak. The cost of water is one of the gardens greatest expenses so we all need to conserve when we can. Thanks to everyone that volunteered to help on Saturday - there is still lots to do so we look forward to seeing everyone. See you in the garden ! Re: bees allowed in garden?
Sarah Hutt
The garden has been through this about 4 years ago - we were denied approval because there isn’t a place within the garden that provides the right amount of buffer space between the public paths and the hive - also there was concern from people that are bee allergic and the neighbors who have balconies that open up to the garden -
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
If you intended to pursue this the Boston Zoning Board which must give approval would require a letter of approval from the land owner, the Trustees. The Trustees would require support from gardeners, and along with that Zoning would require letters of support from abutting building owners. Instead we have tried to concentrate on growing flowers that attract bees. You probably noticed the influx of bees in mid summer when the Chinese melons and squash start to bloom. They bring hundreds of them. If you are interested in planting flowers in the common areas to attract bees let me know. Sarah C105
