Re: daffodils for the fall

Linda Ciborowski

Hi, I’ve picked them up the past few of years and as long as they don’t change the location, it’s a pretty easy pick up. They give them out over a two day period at a building on the edge of Franklin Park. Easy to get to and plenty of parking. The largest bag is like a mesh onion bag that isn’t too heavy and they are sometimes broken up into even smaller paper bags. They are also really organized, so it usually doesn’t take long either.
Best,
Linda

We need at least one person to be the Berkeley Community Garden Contact with the Boston Parks Department for our annual supply of daffodil bulbs.
This requires submitting a request and picking up the bulbs - or coordinating with another gardener to pick them up.
Our end of season cleanup in October 27th we usually have the delivery by then.
Please let me know if this is a task you would like to take on
thanks

help needed to spread crushed stone

Sarah Hutt

Hi all
I am looking for help to do some important work.

The Trustees will be delivering a load of crushed stone to be spread over our garden paths.  This will solve the problem of the dips and holes that have appeared primarily around the irrigation faucets and on the slope at the Tremont entrance.

The Trustees will provide a compacter that will go over the areas once the stone is spread to pack down the stone.

We will need to move it from the Shawmut entrance because with our cleanup on October 27th we will want to make sure the area is open so we have easy access to the dumpster.

If you are interested in being the Key Contact with the Trustees representative Jeremy you will coordinate our team with his.

If you are interesting in being part of the team --- any amount of time would be greatly appreciated — please let me know.

The stone will arrive on a Friday --either October 12 or 19th.  This is to take advantage of the NO PARKING along Shawmut Ave during street sweeping but we do not yet have a confirmed date.
Thank you.
Sarah

Hello again
I’m looking for some folks to attend the annual Trustees meeting for Garden Coordinators with me - free dinner - its held at the Kitchen by the North Station T stop, near Faneuil Hall, behind Boston City Hall.  This is a great time to meet other community gardeners from around the city and find out what kind of services the Trustees are providing for the following year.

PLEASE NOTE: Any gardeners interested in becoming a member of the Trustees or renewing your Trustees membership----All membership joins and renewals processed by the community garden Trustee staff in Boston will support the Community Gardens operations. Garden Tasks

Sarah Hutt

Hi all,
Here are 3 on-going opportunities to contribute to the garden well being.  They each need someone to oversee them.

Garden outer gates
We need someone to take care of the garden gates - there are three gates.  Jeremy, from the Trustees checks them in the spring and fall when the water is turned on and off but it would be great if we had someone paying particular attention to them in case they break and to do simple maintenance in mid-summer just to keep everything in working order.  If interested you will be put in touch with Jeremy to go over the simple tasks that can be done.

Rabbits and Rats
Ted B103 has been taking care of this on his own for the past 6 years.  It would be great to have one or two people to work with him- keep track of which gardens have rat traps, be a contact if anyone has a rat problem, and coordinate with the exterminator.

Chinese Pergola
On the Shawmut end there is a wooden pergola with Chinese text on it that was one of the original gateways into the garden.  It is in need of revitalization.

If anyone is interested in any of these opportunities please let me know.
thanks

And as a reminder - if you have been working in the garden send in your hours to cleanups.  If you are not retuning next year please let us know - we will make arrangements for you to return your keys when you are done with your garden.

See you on October 27th

Berkeley Garden update and last chance cleanup

Sarah Hutt

To all

Thank you to everyone that made it out this weekend to clean out their plot and help pick up trash in the garden.  It was great to see so many people working in the garden.

Your contributions over the summer made it a great season.  Thank you to everyone that pitched in to maintain our garden community by either working on a team or independently to perform general care and kindness throughout the season.   It was great to see people come out for Monday night cleanups and social hour and those that worked on their own to pick up trash;  great to see everyone that came out in the spring to help get renewal notices out and staffing our annual renewal at Project Place; our translators for their hard work translating all our documents and notices; recording work hours at cleanups; the compost team that manages the multiple soil deliveries; everyones help with our spring and fall cleanups by ordering and delivering coffee and donuts, help setting up, and all the tasty foods for our potluck; ordering daffodil bulbs; sign making; making sure the gates are locked every single night and opening in the morning;  meeting the dumpster and getting dumpster permits, taking care of the plumbing, monitoring and giving out keys and garden padlocks; recording community hours; updating the member rules; our treasurer; Leadership Committee who help keep the garden moving forward, the snow removal team; working with the professional pest exterminator and baiting rat traps; attending Trustee meetings and participating on the alley fence committee; watering, weeding, and planting in the common areas and C Row, and……...

If you think you didn't get credit for work you did this summer please sent to Susan to record at  cleanups@...  include: name, plot number, number of hours, description of task, and picture if you have it.

Remember there are daffodil bulbs available if you are interested in planting them in your garden or in the common areas.

If you still have cleaning to do there is another cleanup the City sponsors this weekend November 10 called Love Your Block.  We need someone to act as the garden contact so arragments can be made tor trash pickup.  They usually come around noon, everything needs to be set out on the sidewalk for pickup, so a designated area needs to be agreed on.

If you are giving up your garden membership we will miss you - thank you for being part of the garden, for some of you its been many wonderful years — please make arrangements to return your keys for the gates and if you have a garden padlock please return your keys so we can reuse your garden padlock.

Thank you

One last cleanup and other things to do

Sarah Hutt

Hi all
Saturday, November 10 is a final chance to cleanup your garden.  The City of Boston will be holding its fall cleanup.  Trash will be collected from the sidewalk along
E. Berkeley and Shawmut Ave.  Please let us know if you intend to help that day.  Cleanup will run till about 1pm on that day.

Remember there are daffodil bulbs available to be planted -  plant them in your garden or in the common areas.

Help needed
SNOW REMOVAL Team - we need a team to help clear snow from the sidewalks.  We will still have  a snow removal company come but we need to just manage sanding the sidewalks and keeping the area clear between larger removal by the company.  If you are interested in working on the garden team you will be credited double hours for your efforts.

Remember
If you are giving up your garden membership we will miss you - thank you for being part of the garden, for some of you its been many wonderful years — please make arrangements to return your keys for the gates and if you have a garden padlock please return your keys so we can reuse your garden padlock.

57 days till spring

Sarah Hutt

To all
Just a reminder that if you aren’t returning to the garden this summer please let us know - we are preparing the Renewal Mailings which will go out Feb 2 so save a stamp - save a tree- and let us know.  Have you moved since last spring?  Please send in your new address so you don’t miss your Renewal invoice.

Thank you to the snow crew - who have been doing a terrific job keeping the sidewalks around the garden clear.

We were notified by Jeremy, our Trustee representative that he has started to do some cleanup in our garden that we didnt get to last year.  He fixed the broken alley fence on the Shawmut end and cleared debris at the base of the Berkeley sidewalk fence which include, raking out the border along Berkeley and removing trash and leaves, removing weed trees, and cutting back some shrubs and vines that were reaching into pathways. He then returned to complete the Dwight Alley side of garden.  It is the Trustee policy to remove all vines and branches that come through the outside fences or overhang the paths.

A couple of other things:
The two dead Ginkgo trees along E. Berkeley will be removed in March/early April and the three large Locust trees will be pruned, to thin and lift the trees branches.  The cost of this is paid for by our garden dues.

Berkeley Street border. In the spring Jeremy will be doing some regenerative pruning on the dogwoods and mulch the border.  The dogwoods will  be cut back to ground level to keep them from becoming overgrown and make it easier to clean debris and weeds from around them.  The border will be healthier and weeds reduced with mulching and pruning.  This work will happen in the spring - April or May - if you would like to help Jeremy please let me know.

We have requested the return of our garden signs that were removed when the fence was being scrapped.  If anyone would like to work with Jeremy to update our signs  let me know.

More information soon,
